This trick only works for 32-bit editions of XP, but there’s a workaround for 64-bit versions here. That should fix the problem. If it enabled Go here and run the fixit for XP. If you're running Windows XP on a network, it's possible that your network security settings could stop you from using the Windows Update feature.
